FACTS ABOUT BARANGAY LAWAAN

Infrastucture
Development

Barangay Lawaan has greatly developed from its original form of community but is still predominantly rural. The original school building was dilapidated and was renovated with the addition of 3 unit school buildings with 2 regular rooms. The Barangay Hall has two stories and is located near the Daycare Center and is adjacent to the basketball court. There is 1 unit GEPEP pavement and warehouse under the RIDT and is currently funded by the ADB. An infrastructure for the supposed barangay market is also present but not operational.

 

Furthermore, there is an ongoing RIDP road project connecting the main road of Tampilisan to Barangay Lawaan and San Jose.

Occupants

Barangay Lawaan was originally occupied by the Subanen tribe. Among them were the Totao and Eting clans. Some descendants of these clans are currently residing at the barangay while others have now settled in the hinterland barangays of the Municipality of Tampilisan.

 

Furthermore, migrants from the Visayas regions of Cebu, Bohol, Negros, Panay, Leyte, Siquijor and the Ilocos and Bicol regions of Luzon have also  started settling in the barangay and have set up their means of livelihood by means of farming and other business ventures. During the 2000 census, there has been a record of 282 households with a population of 1,236 inhabitants and 476 registered voters. The current population for year 2014 stands at 1,463 inhabitants.

Economy and
Industry

The barangay’s income is mostly derived from taxes such as real property tax and community tax as well as from LGU subsidy. The barangay’s annual Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) is Php 1,231,305.74. The monthly allotted release for the barangay is Php 98,859.00. The income is usually spent on the barangay’s road maintenance, water system and multipurpose building.

 

The means of livelihood in the barangay depend mostly in agricultural production of rice, corn, coconut, root crops, fruits, vegetables and rubber. Livestock dispersal is also one of the people’s source of income.

Communication and Transport
Health Services and Sanitation

At present, a Barangay Health Station is present near Lawaan Elementary School. However, it is only being utilized every third Thursday of the month. Health services rendered are aligned with the Department of Health monthly program such as nutrition related services (operation timbang and supplemental feeding) on January, Garantisadong Pambata on April and October, MR-OPV on September, and filariasis on November. They also have monthly family planning counseling, prenatal and immunization. The health service providers are limited to one midwife, one contractual nurse under the Nurse Deployment Project (NDP), three barangay health workers (BHW’s) and one barangay nutrition scholar (BNS). Currently, occupants of the barangay seeking health services are referred to the rural health unit to be seen by the municipal health officer. In worse cases, patients are referred to the nearest hospitals which are located at the Municipality of Liloy, Titay, or Ipil. The barangay also support their barangay health workers by giving them an allowance of Php 500 every month for their services.

 

The barangay also utilizes the use of compost pits located near the barangay hall for their garbage disposal.

Communication in the barangay is only through mobile telecommunications. Wired communication system such as telephone landlines are not available in the area.

 

Barangay Lawaan is accessible through only one public transportation which is the “Habal-habal” or a Single Motorcycle.
