LAWAAN TRAILBLAZERS

The Ateneo de Zamboanga School of Medicine is an innovative medical school that is sensitive to the cultural, political and social realities in Zamboanga Peninsula. The school aims to provide solutions to the health problems of the region. With this in mind, student doctors are sent to the communities  with lesser access to health care.

Team Lawaan is a group of seven (7) medical students assigned in barangay Lawaan, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte. They serve as collaborators between the different stakeholders involved in the development of the community. The results of this collaborative effort is translated to Community Health Plans (CHP), which purpose was to address pressing health issues that impact the community. The end goal of  the CHP is to make each community reliable and responsible for their own health even after the student doctors are disengaged from the community.

As  the student doctors leave the community it is their hope that the trails they left are followed through by the people. Team Lawaan envisions a community where people of different age, gender, educational attainment, socio-economic status, and religion work hand in hand to achieve self-reliance when it comes to their health. They desire that the people will gain the ability to pool their own resources and organize themselves to achieve goals, to tackle important issues on health and to solve their own problems.  -Mary Krizelle B.
